For everyone who digs resource management sims and fancies themselves the world’s best mayor, president, pharaoh, evil dictator or what have you, this one’s for you. Whether it’s bringing life to the underwater depths, one lightbulb at a time, an ancient empire that will stand the test of time, or carving out a niche for humanity’s survival in a wasteland, resource management is a fine art as well as a science. Here are some of the most promising new City builder PC releases to look out for in the next two years:
- Colonize – Rembrosoft
Take control of 6 fledgling settlements in the New World, while battling and braving all the human and environmental hostilities that the pilgrims faced in real life. You’ll have to take care of the health and morale of your settlers, shore up defenses and build up infrastructure and communication lines. The game doesn’t have an official release date yet, but the demo was released in August 2022.
- Thrive: Heavy Lies the Crown – Zugalu Entertainment
In this medieval city builder, all your choices matter, and play out in fascinating graphic video detail that provides you instant feedback on the results of your decisions. Will your citizenry thrive under your benevolence, or be crushed beneath your iron fist? The game has a tech tree, and an RTS combat element stimulating many aspects of combat, from battle fatigue and morale to the state of weapons and equipment. Early access is slated for March 2023.
- Abyssals – Overpowered Team
A survival city builder set in the gloomy underwater depths of an extremely hostile alien planet, your job is to bring light to the new world before you, keep your colonists supplied with oxygen in addition to the basic needs like food and shelter, explore the hostile and dangerous world around your settlement while hunting for rare resources, and build up your infrastructure to keep all your territory illuminated, for who knows what sinister creatures lurk in the darkness?
- Spirit & Stone – Garden Gate Interactive
In what can be best described as Anno meets Minecraft, this game challenges you to quite literally build your kingdom block by block from the ground up. Styled after the Minecraft blocky aesthetics that defy gravity and other Newtonian physics, you can build your kingdom from quaint village to sprawling castle, as you explore the territory and befriend other kingdoms and mythical creatures.
- Aquatico – Digital Reef Games
Another underwater survival city builder, this one challenges you to build vertically and conserve space while ensuring vital oxygen access. This game has a useful tech tree to unlock improvements vital for survival, and offers you a hazardous outer world to explore and uncover secrets vital to the game.
- Frostpunk 2 – 11-Bit Studios
While no details have been released for the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Frostpunk, which challenged players to make difficult decisions with very limited resources and forced them to face the unforeseen consequences of those actions, the game deserves an honorable mention on any list of city builder sims we should all be looking out for and forward to!
